Introduction

This is a WebQuest for grades K-2.

It is meant to inform the students about where food comes from, and all of the hard work farmers do to produce the ingredients we need for our favorite foods.

It was designed to be broken into sections, so the unit can be spread over multiple days.  All of the worksheets and specific directions are located on this page under each corresponding section.

You can have the students do the WebQuest as a class as opposed to individual computers for younger students.

Unit Notes and Process

Step 1

î         You’ll need a computer to watch videos with sound for the commercials.

Step 2

î         Look at the milk side first, and then the wheat side.

î         You can read the text in the first link about wheat grown in Virginia aloud to your students.

Step 3

î         Purchase Cheez-Its for you class to investigate with their senses.  You can have them pre-bagged if you want to make sure each student gets an even amount of crackers.

î         Cheez-It Investigation Worksheet

î         For younger students, you can brainstorm with them as a class and write the descriptive words on the board for them to copy.

Step 4

î         Here is a poster about handwashing to print out and post.

î         If there is a sink in your classroom you can go through the hand washing process at the sink, or you can take the students to the bathrooms as a class.

î         You can present different foods to the students and ask if they need to be washed before they are eaten.  You can do this by holding up pictures of food.  You can ask the students if they see the pattern of washing fruits, vegetables and some meats, and not grains, dairy, etc.

î         For older students, you can encourage them to make up new lyrics about hand washing and hygiene to the tune of Old McDonald.

Step 5

î         Cheez-It Description Worksheet

Conclusion

î         Here is the worksheet for the students to draw their cartoon and write their sentences.

î         For younger students, instead of writing the steps of how Cheez-Its are made, you could have them write the descriptive words they came up with or to say where they are in the world and what the people in the picture are doing.
